RE: Annual Restatement of the BVE Guiding Principles

Dear BVE Stakeholders, our Portfolio Companies, and the broader entrepreneurial community,

Our Bonaventure Equity (“BVE”) Guiding Principles have been a foundational element of our firm over the past several years. Each prior year has brought about massive change, growth and expansion. We are no stranger to the dynamic of entrepreneurship; effectively allocating scarce resources, and making decisions based on imperfect information, without the luxury of time. This year, however, feels very different.
Annual planning is always an intensive and positive experience as we test how we performed over the past 12 months against the principles that define our professional mission. As a result, we are more focused than ever in serving leading entrepreneurs with capital and resources.
The Five Guiding Principles shared below are an articulation of the founding ethos of BVE when I started the firm over seven years ago. By holding ourselves accountable, we also inspire accountability within each company we invest in. This year's reflections resulted in further refinement but also reaffirmed our commitment to creating value in the years to come.
The praxis of action is liberating, and we believe in the quality of the work as much as the outcomes. This year we are dedicated to collaborating with partners who approach entrepreneurship with curiosity and are willing to embrace radical self inquiry to unlock their potential. We believe that entrepreneurship is a sacred (and personal) mission and by building communities, together we can render value for all stakeholders.

The Five BVE Guiding Principles
  1. We back dynamic people. We evolve from the traditional views of investing in entrepreneurship to best serve the founders of today. We have high expectations, value hard work, play to the strengths of our team members, and facilitate opportunities for growth and continuous self-improvement. We believe in access to entrepreneurship for all people in every community.
  2. Executional excellence leads to extraordinary returns. We are disciplined investors and adhere to stringent rigor in our process. When founders are inspired to execute they build value and our returns will follow. We cautiously accept risk — and are never cavalier.

  3. We leverage our platform in service of entrepreneurship. We value all entrepreneurs, not just the teams we invest in. We aim to increase the probability of success ultimately mitigating the risk of any venture. Success is not a zero-sum game. We are building something special and in turn, help others do the same.
  4. This is the long game. There are no shortcuts, quick fixes, or easy answers. We are patient and think long term. Execution trumps strategy. An idea in and of itself has little value. The ability of a team to ideate, problem solve, and execute is what matters most. We commit to the journey of life and business over a singular destination.

  5. Accountability for all. We hold everyone in the BVE community to the highest of standards, and we hold each other accountable to do the right thing at every opportunity. Especially when doing the right thing isn’t the easy thing.

We believe our mission is greater than any one individual and strive to add value through everything we do. We aim to make lasting contributions. In summary, we choose to “Venture Further,” and we are just getting started.
